Verizon said on Thursday that it won’t be charging customers for basic data plans as a result of a federal court ruling, but that it will continue to offer customers the ability to add unlimited data to their accounts.
The statement was released as Verizon announced that it had been awarded a $5.4 billion settlement with the Federal Communications Commission in a dispute over whether the company should be required to pay customers for its unlimited data plans.
The agreement, which includes a promise to provide customers with a credit line of $1,000 per month, came after a settlement in 2015 between the FCC and AT&T over its unlimited plans.
Verizon is also working to improve its wireless service, which has been a focus of criticism from the Obama administration.
